The story behind our name
At Speltz, Wernimont & Carrothers Family Dentistry, we are proud to have been providing New Hampton and the surrounding communities with professional dental care since 1990. We are not a one size fits all dental office. Our staff will take the time to get to know you personally, so that we may provide you with individualized care. We understand life is busy. Our office is open five days a week to accommodate your schedule and allow for emergency care. When you enter our office, you will see our dedication and receive exceptional care.

Kara Speltz, DDS
Meet Dr. Kara
Dr. Speltz grew up in Lawler, lowa. In 1996 she was a member of the Turkey Valley graduating class. From there, she went to receive her undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of lowa in 2001. Dr. Speltz received her DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree at the University of Iowa in 2005.
Dr. Speltz enjoys performing a variety of dentistry on people of all ages. In the ever changing world of dentistry she enjoys keeping up with the latest techniques and technology. She especially enjoys doing full mouth rehabilitations, veneers, and restoring with implants.. Dr. Speltz’s professional memberships include: The American Dental Association and the lowa Dental Association.
Dr. Speltz married her high school sweetheart, Nick. They have two children, Brady and Josie. After growing up in Lawler, it was an easy decision to move back to the area. They feel this is a great place to raise a family and be close to their parents. In her spare time, she enjoys exercise and fitness, traveling, Hawkeye sports, Colts’ football. Now that her kids are grown, their free weekends are spent down in lowa City for family time.
Sara Wernimont, DDS
Meet Dr. Sara
My name is Dr. Sara Wernimont, and I grew up in Monona, IA. I graduated early from MFLMarMac and went to Basic Military Training for the lowa Air National Guard, where I served for 6 years. I continued my education at the University of Northern lowa, where I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry.
I decided to become a dentist because throughout my life, I’ve experienced numerous dental appointments and treatments, and I’ve spent a significant amount of time in the dental chair to help correct my two missing front teeth. Towards the end of my treatment, I felt a calling toward dentistry. I know how important and how vulnerable it can feel when your smile isn’t great. I know what it feels like to be missing a front tooth and to be embarrassed to smile. I wanted to join this profession to help educate other people, to help them understand the importance of oral health, and to help them with their smiles. I earned my DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree from the University of Iowa and joined this practice in New Hampton in 2017. It has been an honor helping this community and the surrounding area with their dental care. I am a lifelong learner and will continue to provide the best possible care for you and your family.
When I’m not thinking about teeth, I am either chasing 4 young children around (Noraa, Scarlett, Tristen and Myles), trying to enjoy a date night with my husband, Chris, or relaxing with a nice long run or a captivating book.
Kayla Carrothers, DDS
Meet Dr. Carrothers
I grew up in Walker, Iowa where I graduated from North Linn High School in 2015. After high school, I attended the University of lowa where I graduated with my BS in Human Physiology in 2019. Postgrad, I attended the University of lowa College of Dentistry, where I graduated with my DDS in 2023.
Since I was young I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in dentistry. I have always loved working with people, working with my hands, and I enjoy the challenge that comes along with making each treatment plan specific to the individual. It is the most rewarding feeling knowing you are helping someone in pain or giving them their smile back!
I started practicing at our office shortly after graduating. Since then, I have met many new patients and I am so excited to continue to meet and care for patients at Boeding, Speltz Wernimont Carrothers Family Dentistry. I do not take for granted the trust my patients give me in providing their dental care, and I will always strive to provide the best care possible.
When not at work I enjoy spending time with friends and family, traveling to fun places, cooking and baking new TikTok recipes, cuddling up on the couch with my dog and a good book, and long walks.
Barb Boeding, DDS
Meet Dr. Barbara Boeding, DDS - Founder
Dr. Boeding grew up in New Hampton, Iowa, and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1980. She went on to earn her B.A. in Biology from Luther College in 1984 and her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1988.
In 1990, Dr. Boeding established her dental practice in New Hampton, specializing in family and cosmetic dentistry. For over three decades, she provided exceptional, compassionate care to patients of all ages and built lasting relationships throughout the community. Dedicated to excellence, she continually pursued continuing education to stay current with the ever-evolving dental field.
Throughout her career, Dr. Boeding was an active member of the American Dental Association, the lowa Dental Association, and the Waterloo District Dental Study Club. She also dedicated time to community involvement through the Chamber of Commerce, Holy Family Parish, and as co-chair of Dollars for Scholars at New Hampton High School.
Outside of dentistry, Dr. Boeding and her husband, Dave, enjoy outdoor activities, sporting events, and time with their three children-Cara, Kiley, and Drew and their grandchildren. They remain proud and loyal lowa Hawkeye fans.
Dr. Boeding’s dedication, kindness, and passion for dentistry have left a lasting impact on her patients, team, and community. We wish her all the best in her well-deserved retirement!
